Community Church Maury City
On April 6, 1910, the trustees of the Church of God (as it was called at that time) - Willis Koonce, C.W. Woods, R.S. Robertson, and H.R. Buck, bought half an acre of land from the Christian Church at Maury City for $100.00. Several pastors were instrumental in the growth and development of our church.
The order of their pastoral works are as follows: Elder R. Hart, Elder DeBerry, Elder R.R. Booker, Elder Earl Williams, Bishop A.B. McEwen, Elder J.B. Yancy, Elder Lee Allen Spight, Elder Henry A. Spight, Elder L.D. Blalark, Elder Ewell Jelks, Jr. and Elder Julius L. DeBerry. Missionary Bessie Lee Woods and Mother Lula Samantha Dupree, along with the Sunshine Band, were the first to start a building fund treasure.
In August of 1972, Elder Lee Allen Spight’s pastoral work began here. Elder Spight came to Maury City with a vision that God had given him, and in return, he gave the vision to the members of this great church. Under the beautiful and courageous leadership of Elder Lee Allen Spight, the Lord blessed us to be assembled in this beautiful edifice.

After the walls were up, there was a big setback in the construction. The walls were blown down by strong winds, but God gave us a solid foundation 6 New Members Orientation Community C.O.G.I.C. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
God gave us men like Bishop E.W. Rodgers and Bishop Samuel Lowe, who put the roof on our church; and Supt. Readus C. Smith, II, who helped us purchase our carpet at a very reasonable price.
With God, all things are possible. During the time of our construction, we faced many obstacles and some felt that this wasn’t the time to build. But God allowed the faithful few to stick by Elder Lee Allen Spight and God brought us through. On July 7, 1974, the speaker for our Dedication Service was His Eminence, the (Late) Bishop J.O. Patterson, Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ at that time.

At the departure of Elder Lee Allen Spight, his father, the (Late) Elder Henry A. Spight became our pastor. There were yet many minor things to be done. Elder Henry Spight, along with many of the men, would come and do many things for the up-building of the church. Also, during this time, Mother Zelma Spight, Mother Bettie Sue Vaughn, and the women of the church added beauty to the church and helped organize things as needed. Elder Henry Spight served us well until he became ill in the spring of 1980, and then left us to go home to be with the Lord in October of 1980. Elder Carl Wayne Kenton, an Associate Minister at that time, was left in charge and was later appointed pastor of Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, Milan, TN.

In December of 1981, we were blessed with the leadership of the (Late) Pastor L.D. Blalark. Our Prelate, the (Late) Bishop W.L. Porter also appointed him as district superintendent. At that time, it was called the Maury City District. Elder Blalark came to us, after knowing of our indebtedness, with the desire of paying off our mortgage and the job was accomplished in 1983. In March of 1999, Pastor Blalark took ill and Elder Ewell Jelks, Jr. one of the associate minister, filled the duties of our pastor. On June 29, 1999, God called Pastor L.D. Blalark home.
On January 8, 2000, Elder Ewell Jelks, Jr. was appointed pastor of the Community Church of God in Christ by the (Late) Bishop W.L. Porter. God gave us unity and favor through fasting and praying. Under the leadership of Pastor Jelks, we moved into our Family Life Enrichment Building in August 2009.

In April 2016, Evangelist Julius L. DeBerry was made Interim Pastor and in January 2017, he was appointed Pastor of Community COGIC by Bishop Brandon B. Porter. In December 2017, God called our faith clinic technician Elder Julius L. DeBerry from labor to reward.

In March of 2018, Bishop Brandon B. Porter sent Elder Parham to Maury City to preach the Gospel. In January 2019, Elder Andrae J. Parham was installed as Pastor of Community Church of God in Christ. The church has grown, and we are thankful to God for our new leader and his family working along with him in this ministry.
